 Why Mentoring?
Because it works. Both local and national statistics show improvement in grades, behavior and attendance for students who are involved in a mentoring program.
Youth With Mentors:
46 % are less likely to begin using illegal drugs
27 % are less likely to begin using alcohol
53% are less likely to skip school
33 % are less likely to engage in violence

Results From SMILES Program Mentor/Mentee Surveys 2006-2007 Overwhelmingly Support Positive Results:
Mentees Surveyed:
90% of mentees say their mentors were there for them if they had a problem.
80% feel important when they’re with their mentor.
94% of SMILES mentees say that doing their best in school is important to them.
78% of mentees say they want to make the world a better place.
78% of mentees say they think it’s important to take responsibility for their actions.
Close to 90% of mentees rated the program as either very good or excellent.
Mentors Surveyed:
90% would recommend the program to others.
98% of mentors were satisfied with their experience as a mentor.
Improvement In Grades
On average, the GPA of SMILES mentees improved when data was compared.
Overall grade increases were highest in Math and Science.
